Event: Hugyaw Kansilay Festival to showcase in Iloilo City

For the third year in a row, Silay City’s Hugyaw Kansilay Festival will be joining Iloilo City’s Dinagyang Festival on January 25, 2014, 8:00 am as one of the participating groups in the Kasadyahan Regional Cultural Showcase (The Best of Western Visayas Festivals).

Silay was once again invited by the Iloilo Dinagyang Foundation and Department of Tourism–Region VI to be one of the 11 performing tribes coming from the provinces of Negros Occidental, Guimaras, Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Antique.

Hugyaw Kansilay Dancers will showcase the legend of Princess Kansilay, a warrior princess, whom together with her lover, Lawaan, defended her village from the Moro bandits led by Lunok.

Pickpocketing

A woman reported to the police that an unidentified person picked her wallet at the downtown area of Bacolod City at about 4:00 pm, Wednesday.

Chasyl Policarpio, 34, of Seaview Subd. Brgy. Guinhalaran, Silay City, Negros Occidental said she was walking along downtown area when she discovered her brown wallet was already missing which contained: ATM BPI, ATM Global Philippines PNB, BPI Saving Account ATM, PAG-IBIG ID, COMELEC ID, Drivers License, reward cards, Lopue’s Discount Card, Employees ID, cash amounting Php 900.00, 5 US Dollar and 10 Euro.*

Business: Congressional Inquiry on NAIA Killings Start

There is a need to integrate security operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airports to make them seamless, according to Bacolod Rep. Evelio R Leonardia.

We should also look at the rest of the country’s airports to see if they also need the same streamlining, he added.

Local News: ‘Basyang’ Displaces 3,800 Negrenses

Tropical storm "Basyang" displaced a total of 770 families or approximately 3,812 individuals in Negros Occidental as of Saturday morning, a report of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development (PSWD) said yesterday.

‘Basyang’ destroyed two houses and damaged 55 more, it added.

PSWD officer Liane Garcia said this includes the 99 families or 457 individuals from 12 barangays in Silay and Talisay City.

The three affected barangays in Talisay City include Zone 5, Zone 8 and Zone 14-A; while affected barangays in Silay City are Poblacion, E. Lopez, Guinhalaran, Rizal, Hawaiian, Brgy. 2, Balaring, Lantad and Mambulac.

The Silay City Government was selected as the Most Supportive Local Government Unit in Component City Category in Western Visayas for CY 2013 and for its outstanding support to Police Regional Office 6 particularly to Silay Police Station, in line with PNP Integrated Transformation Program.

Event: 78 couples tie the knot in Silay City mass wedding

The Silay City government has conducted the 11th Mass Wedding last Feb. 14, 2014 at Sen. Jose C. Locsin Cultural and Civic Center in Silay City.

A total of 78 couples tied the knot in the mass wedding. Since year 2008, a total of 907 couples were united through the program of the city government.

Another rebel leader in Negros was arrested by forces of the government Saturday morningat Hacienda Imbang in La Purisima Concepcion, Barangay E. Lopez, Silay City.

Elements of Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police collared Victor Tapang, with aliases Ardem, Gideon, Kenneth.

He is the former Commanding Officer of Sentro de Grabidad (SDG) Platoon Code Name CHERRY MOBILE and now a member of the taxation bureau of the Northern Negros Front, Komiteng Rehiyonal-Negros (NNF, KR-N).

Local News: Fire Razes 65 Homes

Several persons were injured while about P1.5 million in properties were turned into ashes when 65 houses were razed by fire yesterday morning at a squatters’ area in Barangay 10 near the San Juan Street station of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Bacolod City.

The fire left more than 200 families homeless.

Local News: 6Yr Old Girl drowns in pool at resort

A six-year-old girl died by drowning in a dipping pool in a government-owned resort in Murcia town, Negros Occidental, Sunday afternoon.

Police said the girl, Ziara Pueblo, of Barangay Rizal in Silay City, was rushed to a hospital in Bacolod City after she was found no longer moving in the water, but she was declared dead on arrival.

Event: Silay Students Experience Space Science Roadshow

Elementary and secondary students and teachers in Silay City have experienced the NCeries Space Science Roadshow that was held at Sen. Jose C. Locsin Cultural and Civic Center in Silay City.


Space Science Roadshow Project Director Carlito Lerio (left, standing) said they will be also in Bacolod City this February.*

"The road show started last Feb. 17, 2014 here in Silay City and Feb. 19 is our culmination. The Space Science Roadshow is a workshop for both elementary and secondary students. We even have programs for tertiary students," Space Science Road Show Project Director Carlito Lerio said.

The Space Science Roadshow offers space dome, film showing, ask-an-astronomer, space science exhibit, solar viewing, star gazing and other fun-filled activities for students.

Sports: Silay Athletes Succeed in Reg’l Meet

A number of Silay City athletes have won in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Meet 2014 that was held in San Jose, Antique last February 10-14, 2014.

In swimming high school category, Joshua Junsay of the Negros-Silay team won seven gold medals and one silver medal. He garnered gold medals in 800m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 4x100m medley relay, 4x100m freestyle relay, and most bemedalled swimmer. He got a silver medal award in 100m butterfly.

Event: ‘Customized wheelchair turnover made Mayor Puentevella’s day’

Following an early breakfast meeting, Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella went directly to the Bacolod People’s House where a special turnover of customized wheelchairs to Persons with Disabilities (PWD) spearheaded by the De La Salle Health Sciences Institute (DLSHSI) was being conducted and openly said that what he had witnessed has "made his day."

Sports: Softball Showdown of Champions Set This Sunday

The "Battle of Softball Champions" is all set to go on Sunday, March 2 at Hacianda Lonoy Ball Park in Silay City.

This 1-day sports tournament will feature the top softball teams in Western Visayas which include the reigning Asia-Pacific Regional Softball champion Zarraga National High School; 2012 National PRISAA titlist, Central Philippine University; regional SCUAA champion Carlos Hilado Memorial State College; and the long time defending Palarong Pambansa champion Domingo Lacson National High School.

Adolf Ledesma, one of the organizers, said that the event will provide the Palaro-bound Negros clouters, and Iloilo batters seeing action in the National PRISAA and Philippine Series of the opportunity of having tough tests before competing in their respective age-groups.

Event: 4 Associations in Silay City Get Aid

Silay City Livelihood Officer Joserito Lapuos reported that the Silay City Government recently gave local assistance to several associations in the city.

The Samahang Damayan sa Namatayan Barangay Kapitan Ramon Silay City Incorporated has received a P150,000 check, the Former Rebels’ Association has received a P150,000 check, the Katilingban sa Paghili-usa Incorporated Silay City Chapter has accepted a P100,000 check and the Sitio Tayap Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Association Incorporated has received a P50,000 check from the city government.

That local assistance will fund associations’ projects such as Rice Mill, Farm Implements, Tricycad and Sitio Tayap Fertilizers.
